Siphon, swell, draft, draw, elevate… pump.
Silhouetted against a brilliant blue sky with tufts of cumulus clouds floating by lazily, a vintage Aeromotor windmill no longer pumps water on this wheat farm in the Palouse region of southeastern Washington state. Whenever I travel around eastern Washington, I enjoy finding and photographing these faithful workhorses of past technology. But they are slowly fading from view with the long advent of electric pumping equipment now drawing the life giving water out of the land.
Thanks for joining me today, for the view that is right here! ~ Madge

in your part of the country, I bet those are as common as the water tower is in mine
What a beautiful postcard, well done!
We don’t have windmills around here, so they are a novelty to see!
Beautiful scene. That blue sky and a few clouds sure make the windmill extra pretty.
Such a lonesome pic- we don’t have windmills, just water towers.
A simple photo but so much in it to enjoy and dwell upon!
Fantastic shot as always Madge I love the whole thing about it. The clouds, the windmills and the loneliness feeling I get. Thank you. B
A fine shot of this old windmill. I like how you left an expanse of space around the image giving us the full understanding of how they are left wherever they would drilled…even if they are now in the middle of a large field. I have always liked windmills and fondly remember the creak and whirl of the blades producing the cold water for our animals.
beautiful! wish we still saw more of these around!
We still have working windmills for the cattle around here; however, many are being replaced by solar panels! :)
Beautiful shot with the rows of crops!
Stunning Marge. Your photos always make my heart happy. How are you feeling?
Beautiful shot! Makes me think I ought to have a look around for windmills out here.
I hope you’re feeling better these days.
Lovely scene Madge!
In my part of the world “windmill” is reserved for those structures that use windpower to grind wheat; your photo would be a windpump. Either way it’s a splendid picture!
Great looking sky!
How very, very pretty!
Beautiful! Love the green, love the blue, love the windmill, too! =)
Madge, Your photography is breathtaking. I am really in the wrong league here. That sky is what every child dreams of when they lie in the grass of summer. Thanks for sharing with the rest of us amateurs.
I came over from Brandi’s post on plagiarism. I would like to find out about DIGI marking. I now watermark my photos through IMark on my MacBook Pro. I tried googling DIGI but I couldn’t find anything relevant. Would you be so kind as to point me in the right direction as I would like to add DIGI in addition to my watermark.
Thanking you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

beautiful shot
It’s so unusual to see them intact. At least around here. Beautiful scene!
I LOVE this shot. We passed many beautiful farms on our way North to pick up our daughter from college, one of which had a vintage windmill. I tried to keep an eye out for it on our return (with camera in hand) but must not have been at the right angle to spot it (or was otherwise distracted).
This shot is really great! I love the composition. It makes me want to run down the rows with my arms out!
Beautiful shot-and I’m glad you are at least preserving them on film.
