Yellow Roses of Remembrance

The last Monday in May is Memorial Day in the United States of America. A day for remembering, honoring those who have served, those who served and died while in military service to our great country. Originally this holiday was called Decoration Day and was begun after the end of the Civil War in the 1860s. In some parts of the country (like in North Carolina where my cousins live) the day is still called Decoration Day.

While there a few years back, we went to the small cemetery attached to the one-room diminutive white clapboard church where my great grandmother attended at the Union Baptist Church in Cherry Lane. It was steamy and hot even under the shade thrown by huge trees across the graves, as my cousins and I took arms full of flowers and made sure that every grave in the small cemetery was decorated.

Here in Tahoma National Cemetery (the only National cemetery in Washington state) four solitary yellow roses stand, embracing four headstones of veterans. My father is buried here, a WWII veteran, Tech 4 with a Tank Destroyer Unit that went into Europe on D-Day +6 and fought through the Battle of the Bulge. Thank you to all to have and are serving and sacrificing their lives so we can enjoy being free citizens in a democratic society.

Thanks for joining me today, for the view that is right here! ~ Madge
