Almond Roca

Brown & Haley Factory - Tacoma WA

Brown & Haley, makers of Mountain Bars and Almond Roca, both are favorite confections of mine. Located in Tacoma WA, Brown & Haley is the third largest manufacturer of boxed chocolates in the United States.

J. Haley, worked for the spice company Shilling and was experienced in advertising and sales. Harry Brown on the other hand, loved making candy especially chocolates and owned a small candy store. Together they created candies that are known world wide. The two men met in church in Tacoma in 1908 and began working together in 1912, then incorporated their candy manufacturing business in 1914.

Just a couple years later 1916, their company, Brown & Haley was selling a line of candy products including a chocolate and nut confection with a vanilla-creme center that was originally called the Mt. Tacoma Bar, later it became known simply as the Mountain Bar. These days Mountain Bars come filled with peanut butter-creme and cherry-creme too. The bars are shaped in a triangular mound a bit like Mount Rainier which dominates the eastern horizon all around the Puget Sound area. Almond Roca, a favorite gift candy now comes in Cashew, Macadamia and there is another to love, Mocha Roca!

While out before dawn early one morning shooting in and around Tacoma, I took a drive by their facility at 110 East 26th Street to catch their neon sign. This is one of several locations around town where they make, pack and ship their candies. But here in a little round pink building (a bit like a squat pink Almond Roca can) is their retail outlet shop, where you can buy less than perfect pieces and bars at a discount. The price may be less but the enjoyment is the same I assure you! What’s your favorite candy? (Clicking on any image gives an enlarged view).

Thanks for joining me today, for the view that is right here! ~ Madge

I’ve never seen Mountain Bars though I’ve crunched my share of Almond Roca. And I hadn’t known there are multiple choices of both. Favorite candy? A good quality chocolate truffle. Yum!

  3. Gee, Madge. I love neon signs. You’ve taken a fantastic photo of this one. Thanks! My favorite candy, well I have two store-bought ones, Hershey’s milk chocolate and Kraft Caramels. Thanks for asking!

  4. Madge, I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been sick. Hope you’re better by now.
Almond Roca was my mom’s favorite candy, but I didn’t know they had such a great sign. Mom was raised in Keyport, WA. Do you know where that is?
