Historic Hotel Bostwick

Hotel Bostwick - Tacoma WA

In an earlier time, the Hotel Bostwick was beautiful and grand.

The lighter colored triangular building in the mid ground is the former Hotel Bostwick. Currently the building has various commercial and retail business (Tulley’s Coffee is on the ground floor in the point). Located in the heart of historic Tacoma at South 9th Street, St. Helens and South Broadway.

Today, Tacoma is the third largest city in Washington state (pop. approx 200,000), but in the late 1880s Tacoma was a small city of about 35,000. Tacoma saw a boom during those years because it was chosen as the northern terminus by the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1873, with the first train arriving in mid 1888. Greeting travelers from just a few blocks away, the Hotel Bostwick would have been a welcome sight. The modest sized hotel was built in 1889 by Dr. Henry Clay Bostwick, Tacoma’s first practicing physician and later bank president. Local members of the Loyal Legion of the United States, an early veterans’ group, once assembled here and it is said that in 1893 they supposedly launched the tradition of standing and doffing one’s hat during the national anthem.

There is just something unusual and lovely about these old triangular shaped buildings that I am particularly drawn to and especially so when the first hint of dawn’s light drenches the sky in deep ultra-marine blue.

Thanks for joining me today for the view that is right here! ~ Madge
