Sergio’s Barber Shop – Weekly Top Shot #21

Sergio's Barber Shop - Inside Sanitary Market Building - Pike Place Market

Haircuts, it’s what most of us do with some regularity, for better or for worse. Let’s face it all haircuts are not equal. All stylists and barbers are not equally talented or skilled. Over the years I’ve had some very good and some very bad cuts.

I remember one in particular when I was about 23, and went to a shop called ‘Hairy Larry’s.’ It’s no longer in business and hasn’t been for many years. Upon the recommendation of a good girl friend who had received several nice cuts there, I made an appointment. My hair was shoulder length, in a classic page boy style. I told Larry that I wanted about an inch trimmed off. The operative word here is trimmed! He turned me away from the mirror, and hair flew. When he finally turned me back around to the mirror, my hair was about three inches long, with two longish ‘tails’ down the nape of my neck. I was in such a state of shock and disbelief that I was speechless and I actually paid the guy. I cried all the way home.

There is something about barber shops that I like. Unlike salons, they always seem to be comfortable, well used, unadorned and quite masculinely practical. Sergio’s Barber Shop is on the lower lever of the Sanitary Market Building (part of the complex of buildings at the Pike Place Market). Even though it was early, just 07:30, the shop was open for the day’s business. Inviting colors drew me to the shop’s window. Where a sign states ‘Straight Razor Shave $20.’ Now I don’t know if $20 is a good deal for a straight razor shave, or if they do a good job of shaves and haircuts, but I like the look of the place.

Thanks for joining me today for the view that is right here! ~ Madge

  1. Hi Madge, just stumbled onto your blog, and really love your work. You are a very talented photographer and I’ve enjoyed browsing. I live in Utah, but we visit your beautiful state often to visit family. Currently, my husband and I are on assignment for our church in New Zealand for 18 months. This is truly a photographer’s paradise, the scenery is nothing less than stunning! The weather here reminds me of the Pacific Northwest. I’ll ‘follow’ you and visit again and I hope you will visit me too.

  2. Luckily we still have a real old barber shot here, but it does not have the personality it used to have. First of all, women go there. Secondly, many do not have the red and white posts outside their shops. They are definitely a fleeting bit of Americana. Your picture captured the ambiance of the store beautifully. genie

  3. I can totally relate to your haircut story – experienced something very similar when I was very young :)

You have such a beautiful blog, I’m glad I’ve discovered it. Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a kind comment!
