S’Klallam Longhouse

S'Kallam Longhouse

The S’Klallam Tribe is located in Port Gamble WA, between Kingston and Hansville on the Kitsap Peninsula.

Covering 1,340 acres on Port Gamble Bay, there is no private land ownership for the 1,100+ member tribe, it is all held in trust by the Federal government. About half of the registered members live on the reservation and they still practice traditions that have helped shape them as a people and their culture, including dancing, singing, fishing and hunting. Made from beautiful logs and natural wood, this structure is their Longhouse, where potlatches are held with the community gathering for ceremonies such as naming ceremonies, memorials, births, traditional funerals and weddings. The panel with the traditional NW Native American art work slides open giving a view inside and a large doorway for access into and out of the Longhouse.

Thanks for joining me today for the view that is right here! ~ Madge
