Wolbach NE - Grocery Store

Groceries for a small, rural community in the U.S. heartland.

Today’s featured photo is a far-flung departure from my usual choices from around the Pacific Northwest. Here is an image from several years ago when I drove from Seattle, WA to Sparta, NC and back by myself to visit family. On my return trip home I swung a bit south to travel through the beautiful state of Nebraska, to see Wolbach, the town where my dad was born in 1914. The early morning bright sunshine was already hot and the inside of this small grocery was a welcome retreat from the heat for this NW girl. Wolbach was a small town one hundred years ago, and is still, with a population of 238.  I’m sharing this shot to feature the home state of two of my blogger friends, Nancy @ ‘A Rural Journal,’ and Michaele @ ‘Sprout ‘n’ Wings Farm.’  I thoroughly enjoy their blogs…

  1. The deteriorating curb and sidewalk look very similar to some around my part of the world. I’m wondering if that little store is still there. Wal-Mart in the rural South, and I’m sure elsewhere, has claimed the demise of lots of little mom and pop places but on the other hand has brought better shopping conditions, greater selections, and jobs to small outlying communities.

  2. I love these small grocery stores. Unfortunately, something that is very rare these days. It must have been wonderful to see the little town that your Father came from. Thanks for sharing and also for the links to some great blogs. xx

  3. That is not the kind of window display one would expect from a grocery store!
I also feature a grocery store today – it is now normally a big box store, but I found one of the original small town style local variety.

  4. The small town grocery store. We have lots of small towns here in Saskatchewan with 200 people or less. Sometimes I wonder how they can stay in business but I’m sure the local people appreciate them still being there!
    Have a Happy weekend Madge!
