Glowing Space Needle

Dawn breaks over downtown Seattle, casting amber light over the Space Needle. The warm light during the ‘Golden Hour,’ at dawn and sunset brings some of the loveliest opportunities to capture beautiful images while others are still asleep or eating their supper. Are you with me, let’s get out there and shoot! Here the Space Needle glows in that gorgeous light. Just a short while after dawn on a crisp winter morning, the elevator climbs to the observation deck and rotating restaurant about 600 feet above the waking city below. Employees will be the only ones riding up at this hour, visitors will not follow for several hours yet.

Affording one of the best views in the city, the observation deck opens most days at 09:30 and closes at 21:00 during the week, but is open later on weekends. Tickets are a bit steep, $19.00 for adults (a bit less for kids, seniors and military) but oh so worth it! Personally, I haven’t but up the Needle in a number of years, but plan on it this year, as the Needle turns 50. Built as the centerpiece of the 1962 World’s Fair, the Space Needle has become the iconic symbol of the city of Seattle and is recognized world wide.

  1. What a great post…love the information. And you are so right about those magic hours to photographic. Nothing beats that wonderful light. One day I will have those hours to shoot. Right now, I’m usually in a car going to and from work. Ugh!

  2. Amazing picture! The Space Needle holds special significance to me because my husband proposed to me there 39 years ago. I think we need to make a special trip there again this year as the Space Needle celebrates it’s anniversary.
