A duo of mail boxes sit sheltered from the weather, snug inside a miniature red barn ‘shell.’ Located along Wawawai Road in very rural Whitman County WA, the mailman that would serve this area most likely is contracted by the post office, would drive their own vehicle and would travel about 250 miles per day delivering the mail. I was good friends with an elderly lady up in Lincoln county who delivered mail in such a manner, and she could drive those dirt back roads ‘blind-folded’ and with one hand tied behind her back. Ethyl was a delightful friend I met while searching for the Rocklyn United Methodist Church on a photo trip many years ago. Alas, she has passed now, but in the days when I would visit, she would drive. You know that bumper sticker, ‘Get in, Sit Down, Shut Up, Hang On,’ it fit Ethyl perfectly! She ‘flew’ down those dirt roads, it was hard to talk while riding with her….I was too busy hanging on!
