Chilly, but brilliant sunshine…
and a very clear crisp day around Puget Sound gives such dramatic views of the Olympic Mountains. West of Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains rise to their highest point at Mount Olympus at 7,962 feet. They rise almost immediately out of the Pacific Ocean and the west slopes of the Olympics are the wettest area in the lower 48 states with an annual rainfall of 170 inches. Here this beautiful range of mountains are framed behind the private ferry dock which serves Heron Island in south Puget Sound.
I always enjoy a quiet day trip to Key Peninsula and a visit to this little dock where you can walk on the beach, view and find small salt water life including live sand dollars. A favorite beach find are the empty shells of Moon Snails about the size of your fist…
What a view!
