Snowy Hooverville - Weekly Top Shot #14

Hard times in local Hooverville… The last few days have been a test for many families around the Pacific Northwest. The we received our annual snowfall plus some with week’s worth of snow, that in some places was nearly 30 inches deep and the ice storm to top it off. Fallen trees causing property damage and downed power lines with more than 250,000 customers still without power. For some with medical needs it is very difficult. Some grocery stores without power had to dump milk and meat which could not be kept at the proper temperature. Our Governor declared a state of emergency so the National Guard could be activated if needed. Some buildings’ roofs have collapsed, thousands of vehicle accidents have been responded to by WSP and at least one death has been attributed to the storm.

Even though it has been raining most of the day and warmed up to around 40° F, there is still a lot of snow of the ground. The weatherman is calling for 20-45mph winds tonight and with so many unstable trees and limbs there is the possibility for more damage and power outages. Then there is the warning of flooding looming over the region as this melts and runs off into drains, streams and rivers.

Today, I’ll be leaving snowy photos behind with one last snowy shot taken several days ago. Everyone so enjoyed the last time I posted a shot of this 1930 Chrysler (viewed here) that I drove by and took a couple shots of it in the snow. The local homeowner used this now dilapidated old car in his garden as yard art. It reminds me of the Hoovervilles of the 1930s Great Depression era with the outhouse and wash hanging on the clothesline. For me, the snow deepens the mood of ‘hard times.’ Speaking of ‘hard times’ I’ll close this post with the chorus from the Civil War era song by Stephen Foster called ‘Hard Times Come Again No More.’

Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
Hard Times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door;
Oh hard times come again no more.

Legendary gospel singer, Mavis Staples went to Nashville in 2004 to record “Hard Times Come Again No More.’  She has a beautiful voice, you can listen to it on YouTube here.

    Your region has truly been battered. I do hope things turn around soon. Stay warm! Love the photo – it’s gorgeous. And “Hard Times Come Again No More” is one of my faves I have several versions stored in my iPod.
