Stevedoring Services of America - Gantry Cranes

Dreary, winter skies… provide a dark backdrop behind the white gantry cranes at Terminal 18 on Seattle’s Harbor Island. These cranes are in working position, with their booms down over a container ship. Each crane is servicing a hatch and the hold underneath it. At the time I arrived and shot this, the crane hoists are in a neutral position underneath the crane cabs, because it is mid-morning coffee break for the longshoremen working first shift. Behind me I heard the honking horn of the PX truck arriving to slake the thirst and hunger of the men and women working on the docks. I particularly liked the bold contrast between the rail cars in the foreground and the white and dark gray of the cranes and sky above.

Puget Sound is receiving snow this morning, but in some areas and not others. Our neighborhood it is just spitting snow flakes at the moment, but the weatherman calls for snow through Tuesday. I’d like to get out and take some photos… we’ll see…

  1. Sorry Madge that it takes me so long to catch-up on my visitors. Thank you for the invitation to your weekly showcase. Since selling photo stock is my source of photography income, I have to be careful not to disseminate my images too freely… this image you asked for may have sales potential. So I respectfully decline your request, but I very much appreciate your offer. Thank you very much.

    1. Thanks for considering the meme, Doug. I enjoy your photography a lot but do understand the tighter control you must exercise over your images for financial reasons. It is for that reason that I splash a large watermark on mine before posting, hoping that helps keep mine safe.

  2. I had another comment ready to post… then I reread your entry – those cranes have taken on the light (or dark) of those dreary skies and appear to be grey not white as you suggest! I love that they could look entirely different under a less dreary light.
