Dreary, winter skies… provide a dark backdrop behind the white gantry cranes at Terminal 18 on Seattle’s Harbor Island. These cranes are in working position, with their booms down over a container ship. Each crane is servicing a hatch and the hold underneath it. At the time I arrived and shot this, the crane hoists are in a neutral position underneath the crane cabs, because it is mid-morning coffee break for the longshoremen working first shift. Behind me I heard the honking horn of the PX truck arriving to slake the thirst and hunger of the men and women working on the docks. I particularly liked the bold contrast between the rail cars in the foreground and the white and dark gray of the cranes and sky above.
Puget Sound is receiving snow this morning, but in some areas and not others. Our neighborhood it is just spitting snow flakes at the moment, but the weatherman calls for snow through Tuesday. I’d like to get out and take some photos… we’ll see…
a great shot. love the green color to break up the dark grays!
I did too! Thanks!
Sorry Madge that it takes me so long to catch-up on my visitors. Thank you for the invitation to your weekly showcase. Since selling photo stock is my source of photography income, I have to be careful not to disseminate my images too freely… this image you asked for may have sales potential. So I respectfully decline your request, but I very much appreciate your offer. Thank you very much.
Thanks for considering the meme, Doug. I enjoy your photography a lot but do understand the tighter control you must exercise over your images for financial reasons. It is for that reason that I splash a large watermark on mine before posting, hoping that helps keep mine safe.
Wonderful shot Madge. You give a good feeling of the location. I also agree with T about the greens and the lights on the cranes also breakup the grays in the sky.
Thanks Bruce! I’m so glad you’re feeling better and are back with us in blogisphere! :-)
Cold and sunny up the coast this morning, -5°C. We have snow in the forecast also, but hopefully not too much. Not my favourite season.
You’re about 10 degrees colder up there than down here. but it has been snowing for a couple hours, giving us just a skiff on the ground. I love the snow, although I wish my school bus had sanders…
I had another comment ready to post… then I reread your entry – those cranes have taken on the light (or dark) of those dreary skies and appear to be grey not white as you suggest! I love that they could look entirely different under a less dreary light.
Yes, Hamilton, under a bright clear sky they are bright white… I’ll catch and upload a shot of that one of these days!
Great industrial strength shot, snow eh …. mmm bad for camera.
Thanks, Peter… my camera body has weather resistant seals, but I agree the moisture is hard on them….
There are a lot of cities that envy the economic muscle that the port operations provide. I certainly envy it!
I think you’re right, Jack… Seattle is blessed to have several strong industries, the Port.. Microsoft.. PacCar.. Boeing.. Amazon.com – it does help…
I think the sky really made this shot!
Thanks Randy, it is a strong sky… ;-)
You have an eye to capture the colors against gray!
Thanks, Kim…
Looks like a busy place! :)
Yes, the Port is always busy, except for five holidays per year.
It looks like a great place for photos. I like the big machines. Hope you dont get alot of snow.
I really like industrial areas, people being productive, interesting big machines… ;-)
Industrial shots like this are always so interesting.
Thanks Birdman… I agree, nothing like ‘men at work!’
for being a grey day, it is a nice colorful shot!
Thanks Tanya…
A very beautiful and interesting shot, Madge, very well composed too.
Thanks Karl… ;-)
Brilliantly Captured! I am amazed seeing clarity of shot. Wonderful…
Gantry Cranes are now most desiring tool in various industries like construction. I loved reading detal post on it by you. Keep sharing.
