Drink Pepsi-Cola… This vintage metal sign advertising Pepsi points the way to the Cumberland’s City Hall Saloon and Eatery, established in 1893. Cumberland is nested in the lower foothills of the Cascade Mountains and lies in the rich coalfields of eastern King County, and this sign has been there a very long time, since the early 1960s.
Pepsi-Cola became simply Pepsi in 1961 and the stylized PEPSI in caps became Pepsi, cap and five lower case letters. The advertising jingle when I was growing up the in the 1950s and early 60s was ‘Pepsi hits the spot!’ In the 1970s, Pepsi conducted blind taste tests called the ‘Pepsi Challenge.’ Pitting themselves against the more popular soda, Coke. Okay, I’m going to stick my neck out here, I’m a Pepsi-Cola girl, always have been, always will be. What about you what’ll you have, Coke or Pepsi?
i like both actually but i really LOVE this sign!
I do too, perhaps I could make them an offer?? ;-)
That sign has seen a few decades. Great shot, Madge — :)
Just a few…
nice vintage piece!
Surprising that it’s stayed there for so long, not changed out nor stolen the older it gets!
I always enjoy seeing vintage signs, weathered or not. :-)
Me too… makes us reminisce doesn’t it?
I love, love, love that old sign! Great shot!
Wish it was hanging in my home… :-)
Great capture of the a neat sign Madge! But really, “a very long time, since the early 1960s”, you’re making me feel ancient!
Well Paul, ancient… we’re probably in the same boat… ;-)
Yep, long, long ago in the early 60s. . .in the days before smart phones, iPads, Blue Ray. . .those dark ages of yore. . .I’m guessing the signs aren’t the only things that are getting rusty after 50 years.
Me… I think I’m getting rusty! ;-)
I love the sign but I pass on Pepsi in favor of Coke! And I grew up in the ’50s! I don’t even remember Pepsi being around then – although it obviously was!
Shhh… don’t tell anyone, when Coke is cheaper I drink it too! :0
Love the sign and will go with a Pepsi even though I use to work for Coke in the 80s. Took the Pepsi challenge one time when I was at the ChicagoFest (I was working for Coke) and failed. I picked Coke when it was actually a Pepsi.
Lol… I’ll bet that was a surprise!
I gotta say – neither. Back in the 80’s I was a die-hard Coke fan. I liked the beverage too. (that was sooo bad)
Lol…
I love old signs like that. That one is awesome.
I do too…
That would be a treasure to have.
I agree, Randy…
What a great sign; although I prefer Coke…Have a great weekend.
Like I said to Kathy… Shhh… don’t tell anyone, when Coke is cheaper I drink it too! ;-)
I love this sign. Funny that you should mention the Pepsi jingles as we were just discussing them the other day. The ones I remember from the early 60s were “We’re the Pepsi generation” and “Pepsi, please – for those who think young.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4vUwl7YGes
Interesting that the SIZE of the cups that were in the commercial, a ‘normal’ serving in the 1960s was little taller than the person’s hand that picked it up… wow, talk about supersize me now, what can you get at 7-11, 64 ounce!
I prefer Coke. I love vintage things though. That sign is fabulous.
Thanks, Angela… it is a great sign, I agree! ;-)
I prefer Pepsi, but try to avoid both. Geat photo.
I only buy soda when it’s on a really good sale, otherwise I just drink water or iced tea. Soda has gotten WAY too high priced the last couple years!
Wow, that is an awesome picture and even better sign. But you know what, I don’t have a preference between Coke and Pepsi!
Thanks…
Now that is a metal sign if I ever saw one! The thing should be in a museum or something haha!
