a single mountain not a range of mountains, it is impressive,
a 50 mile long mountain.

Located southeast of Burns, OR, it is what is called a fault-block mountain
and the east face is made up of almost entirely basalt and in winter covered in snow.
Steens Mountain rises more than four thousand feet above the Alvord Desert
and Wild Horse Valley to the east.

Historically, fur traders called it Snowy Mountains who were the first white settlers in the are but was renamed in 1860 for an Army Major Enoch Steen. The Paiutes took refuge here during the Bannock War in May 1878.
