Bursting shells in the air… ‘New Year’s at the Needle,’ as the largest public holiday celebration in Puget Sound is called. Music from ‘Star Trek,’ and ‘ET’ were synced with the bangs and flashes of the fireworks display which began at at 11:55 and lasted about eight minutes. This years show will probably be the beginning of a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the building of the Space Needle and the opening of the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle which was futuristically themed as ‘Century 21.’

Thankfully the cold front coming in from the Pacific Ocean held off until the fireworks were over, but it seems to me that the display wasn’t nearly as spectacular as last year. But I am thankful that I was able to get a parking spot with a great view of the Seattle skyline and the Space Needle. While waiting two and a half hours before the display began, I stayed bundled up in my car playing ‘Angry Birds’ on my smart phone and ran the heater once in a while to keep warm.

Hoping you all had a fun and safe celebration, 2012, may it be a very good year!
