Christmas at the Space Needle - Weekly Top Shot #6

Bright… Cheery… Iconic… Space Needle…

What could be more iconic than two iconic symbols displayed together? The Seattle Space Needle is decorated annually by a crew of men wearing safety tethers while they attach cables that will hold the white lights in place and in the shape of a tree. I cannot imagine working atop the Space Needle, at 605 feet, simply the thought of doing that makes my stomach lurch. The work is finished by Thanksgiving day, and then it is illuminated in the early evening the day after Thanksgiving in a ceremony that includes the tree lighting at Westlake Mall in downtown. Last night, thousands were on hand to see the Christmas season kicked off. The tree will spread its glorious light for Seattleites to enjoy between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. Come New Year’s Eve, with the tree still lit, the Space Needle becomes the foundation for a spectacular fireworks show at the stroke of midnight. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

    1. Thanks, Sharon… The flat area where the Seattle Center (and the Space Needle) were built used to be a hill as high as Queen Anne. The removal was accomplished over several decades in the early 20th century… so now Queen Anne is a high point in the area for great photo ops!
