Windmill… Rusty… Motionless… Art…
A tower-less windmill graces a modern aluminum barn on a small farmstead near Spokane Valley, WA, it was produced by Flint and Walling Mfg. Co., in Kendallville, IN. Out of sheer curiosity, I googled ‘Flint and Walling Mfg. Co.’ and was surprised to find they are still in business, still in Kendallville, IN and still manufacturing a variety of pumps after 155 years! Their website states they employ 150 people, some of whom are third and fourth generation workers. They must be doing something right in this throw away age of people and things.
I love these old windmills, anytime I spot one someplace, I cannot resist getting a couple shots for an album full of them. Used as barn art, I must admit this one is the most unusual I’ve ever seen, and I like it! Thinking again about our throw away society, I’m pleased this beautiful windmill fan wasn’t thrown in a scrap heap and hauled to the dump years ago.
what a great idea to put the windmill on the barn. beautiful
I thought so too… what a great way to preserve and display it!
Oh, this is charming!
Love the captured shadows of the blades!
Thank you, Carletta… the shadows were very vivid…
Very nice!
Thanks, Luis! ;-)
Cool detail shot! What a neat way to preserve the wind-mill when it’s no longer needed.
I agree, Jim, it was a stroke of brilliance by the farmer…
Modern Christmas wreath :-)
Yes… I can well imagine with a few lights it would look like that! :-)
oh my gosh! i want one of those on our barn! :)
I wonder if you can salvage one from somewhere, take it apart and mount it on your barn?!?
Bravo to that company & for 155 years and, you’re right, esp in this day & age! Great find & here’s to 155 more years!!!
Thanks for sharing on Barn Charm =)))
I agree, Tricia… I was amazed when I discovered they were still in business… I fully expected to google the name of the company and come up with zip, zilch, nada!
It looks like this was made to last forever – not one blade is missing or seriously bent out of shape.
A perfect spot for an art display like this.
I agree… also it is one of the largest windmill fans with the most blades I’ve ever seen… and I’ve seen quite a few windmills…
I like it! – a great idea to preserve it on their new structure.
Agree, Paul… ;-)
Somebody has a good idea of a windmill on a barn. Great photo!
I couldn’t agree more, Susan… I’d probably personally never thought of displaying an old windmill fan in that manner, but they did!!
Awesome about the company and the generations of employees! Also AWESOME barn art. I’d have had to shoo tit too. I love old ag stuff!
That history about the company was quite a surprise! We’ve got something in common then, a love for old ag equipment…
Nice wall art!
I agree… I think that windmill fan is a keeper!
Artistic photo of an artistic barn, lovely!
Thank you, Karl…
