Turkeys in the Straw

Wild Turkeys - Rural Spokane County WA

Wild Turkeys… Roll ’em up and twist ’em up… A high tuck a-haw… And hit ’em up a tune called… Turkey in the Straw…

‘Turkey in the Straw’ is a traditional folk song from the early 19th century. It is one of my favorite tunes played on a fiddle. I considered for a time, picking up a fiddle and teaching myself to play (like I did with guitar, banjo, autoharp and hammered dulcimer), but I never have, maybe one of these days. I love those who can play a mean fiddle! When I hear a fiddle tune such as ‘Turkey in the Straw,’ I find it difficult not to tap my toes! Two of my favorite fiddle players are Charlie Daniels and Alison Krauss.

Here in northeastern Washington state along rural Crescent Road in Spokane County, I came up on a flock of about seven turkeys. They were fairly unconcerned about me and my camera and did not run into the woods. Instead they kept an eye on me, walking away into the underbrush and then disappearing.

(Update on Sunday, November 20… I’m not sure if I’m supposed to enter my own meme, ‘Weekly Top Shot,’ or not, but of the images I’ve posted this week, I consider this my ‘top shot,’ so I’m entering it!)

  1. Look exactly like the wild turkeys we have here — aren’t they cool? This is a very nice shot, Madge. Well done.

And I know what you mean about dreaming of learning to play an instrument. I have a very nice guitar and started teaching myself, but I think I’m at an age where my attention span is shrinking. I can play a couple of chords, but that’s as far as it goes. :)
