Rainbow Over the Palouse - Near Latah WA

Rainbows, rare, brilliant and beautiful, a weather phenomena that I never tire of seeing.

:   :   :

The Palouse is a premier wheat growing region of the northwestern United States,

covering parts of southeastern Washington, west central Idaho and some say part of northeastern Oregon.

:    :   :

The region was populated early from immigrants who came west on the Oregon Trail,

and farmers discovered dry land wheat farming which attracted many homesteaders and the region grew.

Today, this lovely rural region is dotted with tiny towns here and there scattered far and wide

among the miles and miles of undulating hills which resemble sand dunes or waves.

: : :

There are many professional photographers who bring students here to the Palouse for photography workshops.

I have never attended one, they are very expensive.

Besides, I have no interest in seeing what someone else thinks about the area, or how they shoot

I prefer to stay for a week at a time,

getting up prior to dawn, and driving the local paved and dirt roads until dusk shooting what I find along the way,

then returning again to the Best Western Wheatland Inn in Colfax for a night’s rest and

review of the images captured during the day.

The Palouse is my favorite region of Washington state, where I search for places that will stay in my heart and mind for years.

:   :   :

Here, driving back to Colfax late in the afternoon, near the small rural town of Latah,

a squall passes by, dropping snow and freezing rain,

then leaving with a rainbow kissing the tender green blades of spring wheat

emerging gradually from the slowly warming fertile soil.
