Seattle Fire Boat Leschi and Space Needle

Spewing water…showing off! This 108 foot boat was built in 2007 and can travel up to 14 knots and deploy 22,000 gallons of water per minute. The water pumped out can be spewed up to two city blocks away. The boat also has a 6,000 gallon reservoir of fire-retardant foam to control chemical-fueled fires. A haz-mat station aboard with showers for exposed vessel personnel is available if needed. In cases where the environment around the boat becomes toxic, it can seal itself off from outside exposure at the touch of a screen, sealing doors, with fans and filters kicking in and it becomes a TFZ ‘toxic free zone.’ In the event of an earthquake where water mains are damaged in the downtown area, the Leschi has connections on deck to assist land based fire fighters by supplying them with water as was done in San Fransisco after the 1989 Marina District earthquake and in New York after 9/11 to help quell the fires at ground zero. All of the wonderful technicalities aside, she puts on a spectacular show around Elliott Bay once a week, and here I’ve caught her framing the Space Needle.
