A little summer garden bounty held in a vintage granite colander, washed and waiting to be eaten… tomatoes! In my opinion nothing says summer garden to the taste buds quite like sweet, juicy homegrown tomatoes. My garden got a late start due to the long delay in warm sunny weather here in Seattle, but at long last the bounty is starting to come into my kitchen.

Yesterday, I pick about three gallons of cherry tomatoes. I didn’t want them to go to waste so I made ‘Tomato Preserves.’ Tomatoes, sugar, 2 oranges and 1 lemon (zest and juice), cinnamon, all-spice, cloves and ginger… cook, pack into hot, clean jars and water bath for about 10 minutes…yum! What have you done with your abundance of tomatoes?

Oh, yum! Don’t those look delicious! I bought what I thought were yellow cherry tomatoes at a massively overcrowded garden club plant sale only to have them grow into something the size of small watermelons. Luckily, they didn’t grow 20 to a vine as I expected. . .Yours look more like what I had in mind.

    1. Mine were called SunGold… they were indeterminate … boy did they GROW! We ended up pounding a long pole in the middle of each tomato cage and then using twine carefully tied them up so I could again get inbetween the raised beds to harvest my garden bounty! I also raised some heirloom tomatoes called Cherokee Purple… oh man, are they juicy and sweet!
