Crab Cocktails, Crab Cakes, Crab Dip, Crab Stuffed Mushrooms, Crab Fondue, Crab Stuffed Fillet of Sole, Crab Newberg…Dungeness Crab (Cancer Magister) are native to the west coast of the U.S. These are crustaceans of course, because they have an exoskeleton. The shell of Dungeness crabs are purple-tinged, grayish-brown on the back with white tipped claws, with an average adult measuring about seven inches across the back.
It is the sweetest of all crabs, the Dungeness come from the waters of Washington and Alaska. The Dungeness Crab gets its name from the little Olympic Peninsula town of Dungeness, near Sequim in Clallam County, Washington State. Dungeness crab were first harvested in Dungeness in 1848 and it is the oldest commercial fishing town on the West Coast. Steam your crab for 15 minutes or boil it for 10, then serve, or crack and use as an ingredient in your recipe of choice. The simplest and perhaps the best method to eat crab is to melt some butter flavored with garlic, and dip the meat to eat, it is messy, but a delightful, flavorful, marvelous feast! I started this post with a short list of crab recipes, what’s your favorite recipe?
