Washington State History Museum

Washington State History Museum in Tacoma, WA

The museum glows with an electric blue light in the very early morning hours just before dawn.
Located in downtown Tacoma at 1911 Pacific Avenue next door to the restored Union Pacific Railroad Station which is now the U.S. District Court for Western Washington. The museum features regular exhibits such as ‘Great Hall of Washington  History,’ as well as featured exhibits such as ‘Klee Wyk,’ Artists of the Nisqually Flats 1953-1961. They have a large museum store featuring Native American arts and crafts, and a large collection of Pendleton Woolen Mills blankets and accessories. Want to visit and avoid the entrance fees, visit FREE every third Thursday from 2-8 p.m.  I love history and I love this museum, I used to take my children often and these days when I drive students there on school field trips, I always tour with them if I can.  (A couple blog friends have asked if I shot this with my semi-fisheye lens, so I looked at the EXIF data for the shot as I couldn’t remember what I did, having shot this at the beginning of summer, it is 35mm so I would have used my Pentax DA 16-45mm Zoom, my Pentax Semi-Fisheye is a 10-17mm for those inquiring minds! ;-))

  1. What a great picture Madge, did you use a semi-fish eye lens? It has that nice ‘curved’ look to it. The building itself with the arch type roof is so attractive, I can imagine it would be a really interesting place to visit.

    1. Thanks, Grace… no (I had to look back at the EXIF data as I shot this in the beginning of summer) and it is 35mm so I would have used my Pentax 16-45mm zoom, my semi-fisheye is a Pentax 10-17mm… and yes, I do really love this place (I love history in general and all museums) but this is a favorite!

    1. Thanks, Randy… one of these days I need to go get a couple shots of what was the Union Pacific Station in Tacoma (next door to the museum). When they built the museum, the design reflects the shape of the domed station.

    1. Thanks, Gail… I use my fish-eye lens a lot, actually every time I go out to shoot I use it. (Thanks too for telling me about your ‘bird’ lens… Pentax doesn’t have any lenses that focal length unless you want to spend a lot, (did I say a lot) of money. My longest lens is a 300mm, course I have a 2x teleconverter, but that doesn’t always give the crisp shot one would want.

Gorgeous shot! I’m going to add the museum to my Field Trips List. It sounds like a worthy place to visit. I’m curious: do you recall what time of day you took this? The light is really wonderful.

Thanks for visiting the Sequim Daily Photo blog. It’s great to get your feedback! (Do you get many eagles on your side of the Sound?)
