Skipper on a cell phone… The F/V Gulf Maiden was built in 1968, by Berg Shipyard in Blaine WA, she is 65 feet long, steel hulled and can carry a net cargo load of 76 tons. This day she was turning around in the waterway at Fishermen’s Terminal in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle and was heading out to the Bering Sea to fish. The ship looks like it has made many trips to sea, bearing the marks of a rough life.
The skipper looks like a seasoned boat captain who has seen more than a few trips out to sea and home again. Life at sea is dangerous and hard, those who go down to the sea must be tough. I don’t think I could do that job, could you? Although, I’d love to take a trip with a boat as their photographer, wouldn’t you too??
Nice shots Madge, she’s a lovely looking boat!
Thanks Paul… a few bumps and dings, but she was clean and seemed to run smoothly.
I loved your description of the boat and the life of the ship’s Captain…also, that hinted at suggestion that this ship would have many tales of daring to tell, judging from the rough appearance of her hull. I would not be able to head out to sea, day in and day ou,t in all kinds of weather! I agree that it takes a special kind of person and I’m not one of them :)
I think it would be difficult to leave family and friends for weeks at a time… as you say it would take a special kind of person, I’m not that either. Thankfully there are so we all have delicious seafood to eat! ;-)
A wonderful environmental portrait – the skipper framed by his ship. What could be more apt?
An man in his element… a beautiful thing!
Boy Madge you really got a great shot of the Captain. The lighting on his face really puts the spotlight on him. Being there at the right time with the right light really paid off but knowing when to press the shutter is what really counts. Outstanding Madge!
Thanks Bruceā¦ I agree it was one of those right spot/right time shots!
Looks like a real ol salt of the sea – beard mandatory.
Salt of the sea… I haven’t heard that expression before… but you’re right and I think the beard IS mandatory! ;-)
That really is a great shot Madge. I would have missed something like that.
Thanks Randy…Missed shot?? Nah..I’ll bet you wouldn’t have… :-)
Yes I agree Madge, a dangerous job, the ocean can be so changeable, it scares me a lot! I am hoping to go out with a friend of mine who dives to take some shots, sort of dreading and looking forward to it at the same time haha! Excellent shot of the skipper, lots of responsibility there..
I hope your bravery is rewarded with some great shots!
A shot that looks full of the start of an exciting tale
Both the Skipper and the boat itself do seem to imply a story one would want to have a sit down and chat about… I agree! ;-)
Looks like he’s fallen out of a movie.
I agree his face certainly contains visual character and implies a story to be told…
