Eastern Hotel in Seattle's Chinatown

A historic building in Seattle’s International District of downtown, the Eastern Hotel began construction in 1909 and completed in 1911, it is located at 506 1/2 Maynard Avenue South. This masonry building replaced two wood-frame buildings which were built in 1903. It is an early example of multiple story building with commercial storefront space at street level with single rooms upstairs. The building has housed Chinese, Japanese and Filipino businesses and residents, many of whom worked on and for the railroads. The hotel has had four names, in 1913 it was the O.K. Hotel, then the Kanagawa Hotel 1913-1918, the Freedom Hotel 1919-1944 and the Eastern Hotel 1945 to present. Today this hotel features 46 units for low-income housing. The hotel was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 as part of the ‘Seattle’s Chinatown Historic District.’ This neighborhood was often the first place immigrants from the Far East settled when landing in Seattle. This building is beautiful, the brick work is lovely and straight after standing 100 years and withstanding several strong earthquakes.
