Designed to operated in high winds and heavy seas, the Sea Based X-Band Radar (SBX) is a sophisticated system that is part of the ballistic missile defense system of the United States. It is self propelled and mobile and is mounted on a twin hulled oil drilling platform. This system is in Seattle at Todd Shipyards on Harbor Island to receive repairs and upgrades by the Boeing Company. The platform is 360 feet in length and it is 280 feet tall. This round white globe stands above just about everything around it in on the island. It will be in Seattle for several more months before being deployed into service again. I have two other images of this radar, both at night and taken from Harbor Avenue near Terminal 5. The first is a close up image. The second is a panorama of the Seattle skyline with the radar included.

  1. You asked about my lens to shoot from the Market to Harbor Island.. it is a 50-300 Pentax DA Zoom, at 300mm on a tripod… I find I’m using my tripod more and more these days, not just in low light situations…

    1. Thanks, Reed.. I really enjoyed this radar being here in Seattle this summer, it was massive and I enjoyed learning about it… although I have no idea where it was deployed to when it left last Saturday.
