Volunteer Park Conservatory

Almost one hundred years ago (est. 1912) the Palm House was constructed by the Seattle Department of Parks for about $5,000. This beautiful Conservatory is located in Volunteer Park on Capital Hill, just to the east of downtown Seattle. The park was originally named City Park, but in 1901 it was renamed as Volunteer Park in honor of those who volunteered to fight in the Spanish-American War. The Conservatory, first proposed in 1893, was not completed until 1912. The structure was transported to Seattle from Brookline, MA and currently the only part of the structure that is completely original to 1912 is the peacock or lunette window over the main entrance. The conservatory has under gone two renovations the last was in 1980. About 150,000 visitors (tourists and locals alike) annually enjoy the botanical displays growing in the lush conditions inside. Featuring over 6,000 square feet of display space for varied plant selections, the conservatory is divided into five houses, ie: palm, fern, seasonal, cactus, bromeliad. Open daily for visitors from 10am to 4pm, and tours are available as well. If you love plants you will not want to miss a quiet visit here while out and about in Seattle.
