Milwaukee Railroad Underpass Near Benge, WA

This elevated railroad overpass allows vehicle traffic to move through this short, narrow tunnel.

:   :   :

Not quite one lane wide,

this overpass is out in a very rural area of eastern Washington between the tiny towns of Benge and Washtucna

on the Benge-Washtucna Road.

Commonly called the Milwaukee Road, the rail line was actually named the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad.

The Milwaukee Road employed many over the years including some of my mother’s brothers

who continued to live in very rural Montana around the town Whitehall,

during the 40s through the 1990s when they retired.

My Aunt Myrtle and my cousins traveled from Butte several times to Auburn, WA,

getting off at the station a few miles from our home.

Her husband,my uncle Verne also worked on the railroads, giving my aunt and cousins a reduced fare.

Always a treat to stand on the small station platform waiting,

then hearing the powerful rumble of the engines before the train appeared around a bend in the tracks,

from the east and the final ‘tssssh,’ and vibrations as the train stopped.

The Milwaukee Road, operated in the midwest and northwest from the mid 1800s until the company filed for bankruptcy

in the mid 1970s when it merged with the Soo Line.

Freight trains still use this rail line

and over this tunnel today,

to and from points east and west.
