Big Bottom

Early Morning Light Cowlitz River Big Bottom in Randle WA

Valley Bottom : val·ley bot·tom : valē bädəm [noun] : a low area of land between hills or mountains, typically with a river or stream flowing through it.

One interesting point of history about east Lewis County

is the people who were pioneers here.

Many who came were loggers, miners and farmers from

the Blue Ridge Mountains of Appalachia.

They have added not only their imprint upon the land

by clearing massive forests, mining mercury and small scale farming;

but they also brought their religion (Primitive Baptist)

and how they named the places they found out here

in the forested foothills as well.

This being a case in point,

the Cowlitz River Valley in Randle called ‘Big Bottom.’

Many places in the Blue Ridge are called ‘bottom’ or ‘bottoms.’

Big Bottom in Randle is a flat, fertile valley perhaps three miles wide at its widest.

The Cowlitz River runs through it,

it runs wild without diked banks, floods in the winter often

and is beautiful.

I love this point of view of the river

as it turns toward Highway 12,

for it is unobstructed by trees along its bank.

This particular morning earlier this week

the shadows were still deep in the valley before the morning sun rose

high enough to light the steep foothills entirely.

Weekly Top Shot has been an anchor point for my blog for many years,

but in the last couple of years because I wasn’t sure I would keep up my blog or let it go,

I quit posting much and ceased posting a Weekly Top Shot as well.

In the end, I couldn’t just drop 13 years of my photography life,

so I have started posting again.

Now am bringing back Weekly Top Shot,

starting off with week number 206

which is where I left off

in 2016.

Lol.. The Scots-Irish who came to the US back in the day, named places in the Appalachian Mountains. The moved west and settled here, naming places in a similar fashion.
