Joey, my Congo African Grey, is about nine years old. I purchased him July 4, 2006 from another lady, who’d had him since he was one year old. She decided she could not keep him anymore, she said it was because of her long work hours, but I believe it was because she had a new boyfriend who didn’t like Joey. He’s not very partial to men except for my son, Jake, he LOVES him!
It was a bit rough getting to know him, he bit intermittently, sometimes very often. He will still occasionally bite, but he has settled into being a part of the family. He has gotten trusting enough that he will let me scratch him and pet him just about anytime I choose. Joey has his flight feathers and flies around the house, he’s getting better at maneuvering around corners. His favorite landing spot is the top of one’s head. I have a harness and tether for him, but have never had the courage to try to put it on him so I can take him with me. I would love to be able to teach him some tricks and incorporate it into a presentation about school bus safety and go into elementary classrooms to teach the little kids about being safe riders on their school bus.
Joey loves hard boiled eggs, walnuts, carrots, grapes, satsuma oranges, oatmeal, vanilla ice cream, peanuts and soda pop, Mountain Dew especially (tiny sips only and rarely). He talks a lot, called the girls by whistling like my husband, yells “TooSIE!” He has phone conversations, “Hello,” (pause like he is listening) “okay,” (pause) “o, okay,” (pause) “well,” (pause) “okay,” (pause) “okay, bye,” (pause) “bye-bye.” He also yells “Hey!” and “Ow!” when playing rough with his toys. He mimics perfectly the phone ringing, the microwave beeping, the back alarm on the garbage truck, a knife chopping on the cutting board, kisses and more… A character to be sure. My bud.
That Turkey is internet famous! I almost thought (judging by the explosion of feathers in your main photo) that Dad finally had his way with Joey and cooked him. HAHA!
Nah, not yet! Joey’s just a little snarkey now and then…Joey’ll probably out live us all!
