Pioneer Square
is what’s left of the historic downtown Seattle.
: : :
These days our city
is attempting to dig a two mile long tunnel to replace an existing,
aging viaduct which carries about 85,000 vehicles a day across the western
edge of downtown via Highway 99.
: : :
The big (expensive) boring machine
has now been ‘stuck’ underground for more than a year (after striking a pipe)
and the contractors are attempting to dig a huge service shaft
in front of the boring head to make repairs.
This past week,
it was discovered that pumping water out of that service shaft
has lowered the water table under historic Pioneer Square causing
the old red brick buildings to sink, at least an inch.
On the local tv news, building owners are showing large cracks in foundations,
broken pipes and water seepage causing mold problems.
: : :
Many citizens (myself included)
have long thought this tunnel was ill conceived and poorly implemented,
but the city of Seattle and the state of Washington governments forged ahead anyway,
and now many historic buildings may be casualties as well.
Terrific.

As I grew older, I noticed respect for old things has diminished…:)JP
Oh that is terrible and so sad!
I hope (against hope) that the damage is not irreparable.
I like the way the light illuminates the details in the building.
Oh wonderful shot and that whole thing just makes me sad. Sometimes progress is not what is needed. Hug B
