No, I’m not talking about John Henry’s nine pound hammer.

As you may recall
the legend or fact of John Henry ‘out driving’ spikes
to set rails in a twenty-four hour duel against a steam-driven machine
and supposedly won by mere inches, collapsed,
was carried home and died.

This is not that 9 pound hammer.
This 9 LB HAMMER is a local dive bar in the Georgetown
neighborhood of south Seattle,
in what has always been a blue collar district.

Free pool and free peanuts draw in the locals,
as well as a beer brewed and named just for this establishment by
the Georgetown Brewery called the ‘Georgetown Porter.’
Dark and somewhat brooding,
the tavern is large,
with a long bar and quite a few tables.
If peanuts and pool don’t suit you,
there are shuffleboard and pinball machines.
This isn’t the place to order a ‘fru-fru’ drink,
stick to straight up,
on the rocks
or a beer.
