Here,
during the height of the cranberry harvest season
in the very small southwestern Washington town of Grayland,
I asked to photograph some freshly harvested berries in a burlap sack.
The berries are also called ‘Bog Apples.’
I ate one about half the size of my thumb and to me
it tasted like a crisp, juicy very tart apple.
My husband and son both gave them a taste as well
and spit them out, saying they were bitter.

I purchased some berries for 90¢ a pound,
that were washed and free from twigs and grass.
I froze 7 pounds and with the other 4 pounds
made a batch of orange-cranberry
jam for the freezer.
