Com·bine : käm-ˌbīn : [noun]: a machine that cuts crops (such as corn or wheat) and separates the seeds of the plant from the rest of the plant.

Here,
just west of the Whitman County town of Colfax,
a large, loud John Deere combine harvests wheat in mid-August.
: : :
I will say one thing surprised me about
these huge combines,
was the noise.
: : :
In the undulating hills of the Palouse,
you can hear them long before they round the hill into sight.
To me they sounded like a very loud combination of a vacuum cleaner and jet engine.
No wonder the farmers have enclosed cabs,
not only for a/c and a radio or cd player,
but to buffer the noise.

Huge, powerful and yes, noisy. Very, very noisy.
What an incredible shot, Madge!…:)JP
What a great picture! My husband spent a summer cutting wheat on a crew that started in Texas, and went north to Montana. I always like watching the combine, and occasionally get a ride in the cab when they harvest out barley and beans.
Wonderful shot of an important slice of life for all rural communities!
Bet that causes a sneeze or two.
It almost looks like it is alive…pretty colours too. And a great image.
Stunning shot – I love the colors and the composition. I’ve sure been missing Rurality.
I may start up Rurality again… there just wasn’t much interest… I’ll give it some thought…
We don’t farm very much, but there are some big farmers in our area. I am always amazed at how big the machinery is when I pass them on the road.
