Cremo Cigar - Ghost Sign - Sprague WA

Ci·gar : siˈgär : [noun]: a cylinder of tobacco rolled in tobacco leaves for smoking.

:  :  :

Ghost signs are endearing remnants of the past.

:  :  :

is the back side of what at one time was a saloon,

‘C. Olson, Prop.,’ is stated in another much more faded ghost sign

on the opposite side of the building,

it also states ‘Whiskey.’

:  :  :

I dare say it was a saloon first

and then a barbershop/bathhouse,

and now nothing,

just a slowly deteriorating brick building

next to the railroad tracks in the gradually disappearing

rural Lincoln County town of Sprague,

(pop. 446).

:  :  :

The Northern Pacific Railroad

laid track in what would become the town of Sprague in 1881,

the town incorporated in 1883,

mainly as a service point on the rail line.

It is now a bedroom community of Spokane

twenty-five miles east on Interstate 90.

:  :  :

I can easily see how the saloon would have attracted rail road workers

and later the barbershop/bathhouse,

it is literally steps from the tracks.

:  :  :

On this side of the building

a nicely preserved ghost sign still declares ‘Cremo Cigar, Straight Shape,’

and ‘Barbershop and Baths,’

it is a charming reminder

of days gone by.
