Cordelia Lutheran Church - Genesee ID

Come to the church in the wild wood.

:  :  :

Cordelia Lutheran Church sits on a rise

along the edge of a Palouse wheat field in Genesee, Idaho.

:  :  :

Built in 1883, it

is the oldest Lutheran church in the state.

:  :  :

Church services

are no longer held here on a regular basis,

but it is open for family gatherings and weddings

free of charge.

:  :  :

The site is off grid, there is no power,

but there is a hand operated pump for fresh water

and two outhouses for nature’s call.

:  :  :

Under the trees to the left of the building

are two picnic tables,

perfect for a quiet lunch while listening to the birds

and crickets sing.

There are many Churches across the prairie with this same story.

The Church I attend was two Churches years and years ago. The west half is part of one Church and the east (back) half was a different Church. We have Mass on a regular basis, but sometimes the crowd is pretty slim. There have been a few times that I was the only one in attendance. An outhouse is our accommodations as well. We went a year or 2 without an outhouse and 2 weeks ago a new one was put up!

Glad you’ve got ‘accommodations’ again! Zion United Methodist church up in the Davenport WA area, I had the pleasure of attending services there a couple times, and over in Freeze ID as well at the Freeze Community Church and there were only a handful of saints on any given Sunday. The Zion United Methodist church had pit toilets, but they were indoors, the only country church where I’ve ever seen such…

I am always so fascinated by how small old churches were. It just shows the monumental explosion of our population.
