Dirt Road in the Palouse - Whitman County WA

Dirt road: An unpaved road made from the native material of the land surface through which it passes, known to highway engineers as subgrade material.

Here,

in the undulating fertile hills of the Palouse,

the nation’s premier wheat growing region,

a dirt road hugs the hillsides as it snakes its way over and around

the wheat fields in early spring.

One of the things I like about the Palouse

is the feeling of isolation and peace while driving and photographing

its endless fields of wheat.

You can drive all day long

and almost never pass another vehicle,

it makes stopping and savoring a cold lunch

while sitting on my tailgate

a delight!
