Weathered Door - Rux Homestead - Rocklyn WA

Weathered | weath·ered | weT͟Hərd [adjective]: worn by long exposure to the air; weather-beaten.

:  :  :

Weathered wood,

without benefit of paint can age into beautiful colors,

some parts bleach out

others turn dark.

:  :  :

at the Rux homestead

in Rocklyn,

what once was a small pioneer community in north central eastern Washington,

the siding on the garage is weathered and worn.

:  :  :

On the right

next to a window,

the clothes lines are still attached

and then hang lazily down in the tall weeds

between the garage and the back door.

:  :  :

My mind’s eye sees a farm wife,

in a cotton dress with a flour sack apron keeping her clothes pins close at hand

while hanging the freshly washed clothes of her family

in the morning sun and

gentle breeze.
