Crows at Play - Burien WA

Play :plā/: (verb) meaning: to engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose.

It is said by a professor of Wildlife Science

at the University of Washington, John Marzluff,

that crows

(of the Cordvid family of birds)

are among the few on earth

that play.

while driving home from work a couple years ago,

I saw a huge ‘murder’ of crows playing

in the tops of the Douglas fir trees next to the local freeway.

I happened to have my camera with me that day for some reason

(I didn’t normally take my camera gear to work),

stopped and shot a number of images of the crows,

swooping, soaring, diving, landing and taking off,

all with great noise

and joy.
