M/V Klahowya - Puget Sound - Washington

Gliding almost silently, the M/V Klahowya pushes towards the landing at Vashon Island.

WSDOT,

(Washington State Department of Transportation)

runs the largest fleet of ferries in the US.

It is the third largest in the world.

Whenever I take a ride across Puget Sound

in one of our ferries,

I feel like I’ve left on vacation,

even though it is not

far in miles.

Here,

having just pulled out of the Vashon Island ferry dock

on board the M/V Tillikum,

I stood at the rail taking photos

in a cold wind that thoroughly chills you to the bone in minute.

I caught the M/V Klahowya,

(a 310′ Evergreen Class ferry capable of carrying 87 vehicles)

as she makes her approach to Vashon

before throttling down to dock.

The M/V Klahowya is usually assigned to the

route running between

Southworth (on the Kitsap Peninsula),

Vashon Island (in central Puget Sound),

and Fauntleroy (on the mainland in West Seattle).

It seems all the major holidays

have fallen on Wednesdays and Thursdays,

New Year’s is no exception.

There will be no ‘Rurality Blog Hop,’

while my family and I

wind down from the

holidays.

:  :  :

Wishing you and yours

all the best

in the

new year!

  1. In the early 80’s my brothers and I rode our bicycles through the San Juan Islands for a ten day vacation. We rode 12 ferries in that time both Washington and Canadian. The Canadian were quite a bit larger, they were double Deck.

  2. Always love this type of ferry and always get a thrill when I’ve had to put my car on one! Happy New Year to you and yours! I hope it’s wonderful and you enjoy good health, joy, and prosperity. Hugs to you!
