Near IR Photography is an interesting niche to explore.
: : :
Here,
a farm gate on Vashon Island WA is in deep shadows
and frames an apple tree beyond it
in the full leaf of summer.
: : :
In order to accomplish this photo at the time,
I placed an external filter over my lens,
called a Near IR (Near-infrared) filter and it is a deep red color.
So deep red in fact that it looks black to the naked eye,
unless held up to strong light,
much like a welder’s goggles or mask has optical properties to protect their eyes
from harmful parts of the light spectrum.
: : :
The external Near IR filter,
blocks the blue portion of the spectrum and allows the invisible Near IR to penetrate
into your camera and be captured by your sensor.
: : :
The images captured are quite magical,
as green foliage turns a brilliant white and the filter changes
the other colors captured as well.
: : :
This image is straight out of the camera
without post processing and you can see it is a deep sepia tone.
: : :
I purchased a used Pentax *ist-D 6.1 megapixel body a few years ago,
because after careful research I discovered the sensor it has is very ‘hot,’
meaning it is very receptive to Near IR waves,
even with the stock low-pass filter still covering the sensor.
: : :
I will finally be having that body converted to only Near IR photography
sometime in the next couple months,
so it will be ready to go in the spring when everything starts to leaf out again.
: : :
The conversion consists of having what’s called the low-pass or hot-filter removed
and a permanent filter for just Near IR installed.
That camera body then becomes dedicated to
Near IR photography only.
I can’t wait!

BEautiful image Madge!
Love the light in this!
Beautiful sepia shot.
A very special picture!
Early in the analog black and white photography I have also worked with such filters often … Today, in the digital time I’m just “click” with a very simple little camera (you could see it in “Random5Friday” this week) – I do not have the money for a better camera more ..
Well, I read blogs and I enjoy the photos that made the other blogger.
Have a great sunday
Your photo is wonderful … The light is so special ans the shades A’s Well … Thank you for the inspiration, Madge – I’ll look closer on the Near IR photography – would love to try!
Love that shot. Don’t know too much about this effect, but I really like what it does! :D
Very interesting process, Madge, and a remarkable image!
I really like this photo, Madge. Can’t wait to see what more Near IR photography from you. I know it will be great. I’m glad to see you have Billy Graham’s message of hope linked to your blog.
I like the IR effect on the trees back of the gate. A fine shot of the well braced gate. A very successful shot.
I am way behind – and playing catch up. I hope you are enjoying a wonderful weekend!
now why does that beautiful photo remind me of Narnia? lovely, Madge, lovely!
I so love this shot, Madge. Love the feel of it if you know what I mean.
I never tried IR photography but I have an instruction somewhere how to fake it. Love your glowing image. :)
Wonderful light and shades of brown. Great shot!
Interesting… I’m not familiar with this filter, so thanks for educating me! I like the results.
