Farm Gate in Near IR - Vashon Island WA

Near IR Photography is an interesting niche to explore.

:  :  :

a farm gate on Vashon Island WA is in deep shadows

and frames an apple tree beyond it

in the full leaf of summer.

In order to accomplish this photo at the time,

I placed an external filter over my lens,

called a Near IR (Near-infrared) filter and it is a deep red color.

So deep red in fact that it looks black to the naked eye,

unless held up to strong light,

much like a welder’s goggles or mask has optical properties to protect their eyes

from harmful parts of the light spectrum.

:  :  :

The external Near IR filter,

blocks the blue portion of the spectrum and allows the invisible Near IR to penetrate

into your camera and be captured by your sensor.

:  :  :

The images captured are quite magical,

as green foliage turns a brilliant white and the filter changes

the other colors captured as well.

:  :  :

This image is straight out of the camera

without post processing and you can see it is a deep sepia tone.

:  :  :

I purchased a used Pentax *ist-D 6.1 megapixel body a few years ago,

because after careful research I discovered the sensor it has is very ‘hot,’

meaning it is very receptive to Near IR waves,

even with the stock low-pass filter still covering the sensor.

:  :  :

I will finally be having that body converted to only Near IR photography

sometime in the next couple months,

so it will be ready to go in the spring when everything starts to leaf out again.

:  :  :

The conversion consists of having what’s called the low-pass or hot-filter removed

and a permanent filter for just Near IR installed.

That camera body then becomes dedicated to

Near IR photography only.

I can’t wait!
