US WWII Submarine Veteran - USS Tirante - SS-420

Veterans’ Day, a day of remembrance for those who have served and given much to defend our country.

Here,

at Tahoma National Cemetery,

a WWII submarine veteran sits waiting for the Veterans’ Day ceremonies to begin.

He served on the USS Tirante, SS-420,

which was built in 1944,

and served in the Pacific theater against the Japanese.

She was decommissioned in 1973,

and sold for scrap in 1974.

This veteran was sitting in rather deep shadows.

When I brought up the brightness

in Photoshop,

it gave the image a rather odd looking background,

but I liked his proud stance

very much.

Remembering my late father, late father-in-law and late uncles (all WWII veterans),

a brother-in-law (Vietnam)

now suffering the terrible effects of Agent Orange exposure,

and another late brother-in-law (life-long service in the Airforce).

Thank you to all who serve us today,

and to all who have served us in the past.

Some gave all, and all gave some –

that we

can enjoy

a free nation.

…just looking at this brave, olden man…trying to imagine how he looked as a young man, fighting for his country, brought tears to my eyes. thanks so much for sharing this photo.
I always love your photos so much.

Nice tribute! A restaurant at a local casino served free meals to vets today, my husband included. As we waited we were struck by how old the generations look. We didn’t see any WWII vets but there were quite a few from Korea and, of course, Vietnam – my husband’s era. And none from the current generation.

  4. This really makes my heart swell.
There he sits head held high and proud.
My Grandfather served in WWII. I just remarked to my Mom today that I wish
I had a photo of him in his uniform. Sadly, when he died other family members didn’t share mementos.
My Grandfather was almost blinded by shrapnel but never once did he blame his country but was always extremely proud
    to have served.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful tribute today and thanks to your family ones who served as well.

  5. Very heartfelt post, Madge! I really like this picture.

In my prayers I thank God for our service military men and women. I thank him for our Veterans and their families. We are so lucky to have these special people protect our country and freedom.
