Native American Dip Net Fishing - Klickitat River

Dipnet fishing, a traditional Native American method of catching salmon.

:  :  :

A couple weeks ago,

I shared another image of Native Americans fishing the Klickitat River

for salmon in ‘Rurality Blog Hop #35.’

(Click on the post name to view previous information about Native American dipnet fishing on the Klickitat River).

In that post I mentioned the rickety,

dangerous looking platforms that cling to the side of the rocks,

upon which fishermen stood/stand to fish with nets attached to very long handles.

:  :  :

I won’t repeat all that information here,

I don’t want to bore those that have already read the post,

but did want to share another image from the Native Americans dipnet fishing

on the Klickitat River

to show those platforms to give

a richer understanding

of this traditional

salmon

fishing method.

Wow Madge that is really interesting and scary looking… Great capture. My hubby is from WA state and I can’t think of to many things that are better than fresh salmon out of the river…yum!

  2. Your previous photo and post looked fairly harmless. This one however is mindboggling at the lengths they go to fish.
I’m not sure if that top platform I see is attached or floating over. It looks dangerous at best.
Thanks for sharing this tradition with us.
    Love the shot!

  4. You always have the most interesting things to show us. I need to stop filtering out so many things when I’m out and about. Funny, I first saw “Dipstick” fishing in your title. I didn’t know if the subject was going to be the fisherman or the car part. lol
