Windmills to pump water used to be a common sight in rural areas.
: : :
The rhythmic squeaking
slows and accelerates with the speed of the wind passing through the blades,
a sound like none other that I’ve ever heard.
: : :
In the quiet of the morning,
the heat of the day
or the dark stillness of the night,
the familiar rhythmic sound is comforting.

Here,
outside the western Washington town of Kent
(which used to be rural when I was a kid in the 1950s and 60s)
is an aluminum windmill
which sits in the yard of a farm house,
midway between the house
and the barn,
in a well tended
garden.

beautiful photo…i’ve always wanted a windmill!
very pretty.
Windmills are fun to photograph. It’s sad to think they are becoming more and more rare as technology advances.
Good shot Madge …. nice colors and composition.
Greetings, Joop
What a beautiful capture. We see a lot of windmills around here but never any close enough for a photograph as lovely as this.
We never had windmills in these parts, but they certainly add charm to the landscape.
Haven’t seen one in years. So lovely!
totally reminds me of the windmills that dotted the midwest when I was growing up. Great photo… very nostalgic.
A beautifully framed shot!
Your words convey pleasant imagery.
Wonderful♫
Another great rural shot ~ love it ~ We have the very modern windmills ~ they do the job but not as ‘vintage’ as this photo! ~ thanks, carol, xo
What a magnificent windmill – wow … Thanks for sharing and hosting this rurality hop, Madge – ;) I am on holidays right now so I am on and off my laptop till I come home again.
We don’t see too many windmills like that. It’s so beautiful!
It’s unusual to see such perfect windmills here — the wind has either destroyed them or they are vandalized. This is a lovely specimen.
Windmills are fascinating–this one is a beauty! :)
Great windmill shot. I’ve rarely seen a working one these days – they are certainly good subjects for photos.
Excellent shot.
This is a great shot…love the barn in the background.
The stairs is a fine addition to the functioning of this windmill. I hope it didn’t suggest continuing problems with the windmill. Fine shot.
I love windmills. The perfect answer, for pumping water for cattle, in the middle of ‘nowhere’.
I’d love a small one in my garden. Totally useless, except for decoration. Hmmm….I guess that is a use.
Great photo.
I love to watch them spin in the wind.
Windmills do make interesting subjects to photograph. I like your composition, with the pop of color of the red roof on the barn balancing out the neutral sky.
