Cove Near Treasure Island on Pickering Passage - Olympic Peninsula WA

The estuary of Puget Sound is second only in size to Chesapeake Bay on the east coast of of the United States.

:  :  :

Here along Pickering Passage

in southern Puget Sound is a small cove near Treasure Island

(which is about 90 acres and with a population of about 150).

:  :  :

Puget Sound is a 100 mile long estuary

with many bays, basins, passages, coves and small fjords where the water filled in many glacier created valleys.

It has an average depth of 660 feet and has 1,322 miles of shoreline,

encompassing 1,022 square miles of salt water bays, basins, passages and coves.

:  :  :

The shoreline to the left and right are what the natural shoreline looks like

without interference from man-made retaining walls protecting waterfront homes.

Beautiful, isn’t it?

My husband and I took a day trip to Shelton,

via the 40 minute ferry ride from Fauntleroy in West Seattle (near our home)

to Southworth in Port Orchard on the Olympic Peninsula.

Then about an hours drive southwest to the town of Shelton.

We had lunch and a micro-brew beer at the Grove Street Brewhouse.

Returning home we drove into Bremerton,

taking the 60 minute ferry ride back into downtown Seattle.

It was a lovely day out…
