Blood Thinners

Lovenox, my new friend.

Here is the side of the box of the patient kit, that will go home with me tomorrow, along with pre-filled syringes of my prescribed dose of the drug. I gave myself my Lovenox injection about an hour ago. Not my favorite thing to do, but if it means getting to go home and preventing new blood clots from forming then, by all means, bring it on.

Yesterday, several of you asked what symptoms I experienced that led me to suspect I had one or some blood clots in my left leg. First, I felt like I had a really bad charley-horse from the bottom of my butt to my lower calf. Second, my calf felt like it had a fever and I was sweating profusely. Before I called the doctor’s office I used an instant read thermometer to measure the difference in temperature between my left and right legs, and measured them to find my left calf was 1 inch larger in circumference. I then called the doctor’s office and told them I thought I had a blood clot.

My leg is still very painful, but I’m keeping it elevated, taking my meds, and doing all I can to get better and go home.

  1. Well, they certainly went artsy on that box! I’m just catching up and read this….my dear, you have been through the mill! First the pneumonia and now this. Hmmmm, hope there is nothing I’ve missed! House closing was today, things are moving along, and I’m exhausted BUT not as exhausted as you, I am sure. I will be looking for some good reports! Hugs and feel better…fast!!!

  2. You are a brave girl to be able to give yourself the shots. I can understand your motivation for doing so, I would want to be at home too. Keep that leg elevated and take your meds so that you get better soon!

  3. So glad you are well enough to go home Madge…thanks for the complete list of symptoms, my hubby has many more operations and no one could clearly tell me the symptoms of a clot just as you did so clearly… I think I will type them out. We have had to inject Blood thinners after so many operations it is normal now!

  4. Hi Madge. This is my first time hearing about your blood clots. I’m so glad you caught it in time and are doing better. I had a similar experience 5 years ago. Had a cold, laid around in bed and woke from a nap with a really hot, burning spot on my right leg. By the time I got out of bed and started to the living room, I couldn’t feel my foot on the floor. Hubby had to come and carry me to the couch. Called ambulance right away and took me to local hospital. They weren’t sure what to do so put me back in ambulance and went 30 miles into Sacramento. Called in a wonderful vascular surgeon and he worked trying to dissolve the clot, thought I might lose my leg, but finally got it done, BUT, circulation had been stopped to the tiny veins to my toes and ended up losing 3 toes on right foot. He put me on Coumadin (warfarin) and after awhile said I could go off of it, but I opted to keep it up so that (maybe) it wouldn’t happen again. I have no side effects from the drug and I am able to keep my counts in the right place. I tell you, it was no fun and hurt so badly (nerves) that I had to learn to walk all over again, and nerve pain is still there but could have been a lot worse. Sorry to go on so much, but know that hearing about someone with the same type of illness always helps me..Happy Thursday..Judy

  5. Don

It sounds like you’re on a very good track to get home and over this latest bump in the road. You give an excellent description of the symptoms of blood clots. All the best…to go home soon.

  6. I’m glad you listened to your body – I kept a constant check on that sort of thing after my back surgery – I was told that blood clots are sometimes a result of back surgery. I was fortunate – had no problem. I’m glad they have yours under control and you are about to get to go home – we’ve sure missed you. I had to give Don shots after his open heart surgery to repair the Mitral Valve – I think I’d rather give myself a shot than give one to someone else – but if it has to be done – let’s get on with it. How is your back feeling through all this?
