Mounted on a power pole, this brilliant yellow dragon protects Chinatown.

One of my favorite districts or neighborhoods of Seattle is Chinatown
(some call it Japantown) or as it is officially known, the International District.
: : :
At the southeastern edge of downtown Seattle,
this neighborhood is such a different place than the areas surrounding it.
It is literally like walking into another place and and often another time.
The oriental flair and flavors abound here.
Some businesses are upscale and glitzy and some are very small, and very low budget ‘handmade’ looking.
Always a bustling neighborhood, it is difficult to find a parking place.

A few months ago,
my husband and I had lunch at the House of Hong, a dim sum restaurant.
When we pulled around the corner,
an older Asian man came up to the driver’s window and asked my husband if we were going to the restaurant for lunch,
we said ‘yes.’
Then the man hopped into a parked car and moved it across the street,
freeing up a parking stall right in front of the restaurant door.
We parked and then my husband gave the man a tip.
After lunch, when we left, I watched as the fellow quickly moved his vehicle back into the spot in front on the restaurant,
holding the spot for the next customer who came along.
I wonder how much money he makes in a day doing that?

Here, next to the largest Asian market in Seattle, Uwajimaya,
a fiberglass dragon is twined around a power pole.
One of eleven in the district,
they were created and installed in 2002
as a public art project.
Each one is unique.
I liked this yellow one best.

i like the decoration! pretty smart fellow, making tips from moving his car – hope it pays off for him.
The yellow color sure catches your eye and the s shape of the dragon is great for your composition.
Talk about lucky and cheap parking. Great dragon.
Oh that’s such a FUN photograph!
That seems like a pretty good gig for the old guy. You might have found your retirement job!
Now that is a fun find.
Such a pretty protector. I love visiting Chinatown in Chicago, but it’s been awhile since I’ve been there.
Great shot of the dragon. Love the initiative of the man with the car, and how nice to have a close parking spot.
