American Flamingo

I decided to schedule a little slice of sunshine in the midst of all the Spring ‘grey’ we’ve been experiencing and booked myself a 3 day vacation to sunny San Diego, California. My intention was to do some sight-seeing and go to both the San Diego Zoo and Seaworld, but I ended up enjoying the zoo for one day and spent the other 2 lounging in the sunshine and eating way too much local food.

I always try to stay at an AirBnB whenever I can. I appreciate the environment that a lot of people take the time to craft for you and this spot was no different. The hosts were wonderful and I really enjoyed seeing all their little tchotchkes and trip photos they had added all over the space. In addition, the exterior had an amazing patio space with plenty of shade and a good breeze! I watched a couple hummingbirds drink from their fountain and enjoyed the scent of blooming flowers while I read my book one afternoon.

I try to go to every major zoo whenever I travel because I love seeing the habitats they create for each creature. By far, the San Diego Zoo is the best in the world! This is my second trip, and one I spent more thoroughly than last as I took nearly 6 hours to putz around the park at a snail’s pace. I’ll admit, I was a little worried about visiting while everything was still so locked down because of Covid, but the park was every speck as enjoyable as I remembered it being the first time. Probably even better… There were hardly any people around and no one was crammed up next to you trying to see into the exhibits. I think the animals were happy to be less bothered as well because I didn’t remember seeing so many critters active in their habitats.

The highlight of my stop this time was absolutely the American Flamingos they had on display. Such stunning shades of pink and orange, and they were all in such bright spirits, flirting with each other and prancing around like royalty. Did you know The word ‘flamingo‘ comes from the Latin word for ‘fire‘? Referring, of course, to their bright plumage… Also (this will boggle your mind) did you know the flamingo’s backward bending knee isn’t actually their knee at all? It’s their ankle!! Their real knee is hidden up under their feathers near their wings. Imagine if Cinderella was a flamingo and trying to make that shoe fit!

What was your favorite animal to visit at the zoo?
